Michele Morgante
Genome Scientist – Professor of Genetics at the Udine University, Scientific Director of the Institute for Applied Genomics, a private research and non-profit organization that he helped to found in 2006, where Next Generation Sequencing technologies are used for the analysis of plant genomes. The scope of his research is the understanding of the functional significance of DNA sequence changes and, more generally, of identifying genes that control characters of agronomic interest in order to improve the cultivated plants. His research group has completed the sequencing of the grapevine genome and more recently those of peach, lemon, barley and fir. He received the 2005 Prize for the Physical and Natural Sciences by the Academy of Sciences and, since 2007, is member of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei, Class of Physical, Mathematical and Natural Sciences.
